Our 2016 District 4 Jane M. Klausman Award Winner

Helen Shen

helen-shen-blkHelen is in her fourth year currently studying at the University of Toronto’s Rotman Commerce program pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce with a specialist in Finance, major in Economics, and a minor in Writing and Rhetoric. Like her degree, she has diverse set of skills and interests: finance, film, and justice. She has independently produced, directed and wrote over 30 short films for local to international film competitions such as the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, collaborative film teams and companies. She worked part-time and job shadowed in marketing, at an investment fund and with legal representatives, and this past summer worked at BlackRock in New York City. Helen has completed her CSC and is working towards her CFA designation.

Helen was described as follows: “A highly accomplished student with strong intellectual independence, with many scholarships and awards received in recognition of her achievements in the Rotman program, she recently was selected to be a student representative speaker of her year at our Rotman Commerce Director’s Reception to thank our alumni, corporate and community partners, faculty and donors for their contributions. She was selected as one of the Top 10 business students in Canada for the CEO of the Year Award Futures Fund Scholarship for Outstanding Leadership, proving she is an exceptional young business leader.”

Despite many hardships that her family faces, they encouraged her passions from a young age: finance, arts, and justice. Being at Rotman Commerce is one major step towards honing these skills and along with skills, experiences and achievements beyond university, she intends to continue learning about and working in finance. “This scholarship will help me continue to develop my academic and professional journey to the fullest potential. Recently, I have begun sharing my experiences with others through Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Passages Canada Speaker program. I am also a Senior and International Student Mentor at St. Michael’s College.”
