Governor Bonnie's Post

Zonta International District 4 Governor’s Letter, May 12, 2020

Dear District 4 Zontians,

District 4 News

Congratulations to our Pennsylvania Zontians – Their state is the third to pass legislation banning Child Marriage. The minimum age is now 18 with no exceptions.

As you know, beautiful Nova Scotia, Canada suffered a tragic violent incident. As Past Gov. Lee Fogarty suggested, I sent District 4 Condolences to our two Zonta Clubs there: Amherst, NS & Halifax, NS.

From Leadership Chair Kathleen Douglass – “We have some ‘quiet’ time to learn, share, laugh through on-line videos, i-cloud books and creative self-entertainment such as puzzles and board games. Perhaps during the next few weeks, you can take advantage of the Zonta International Leadership Development Program available to you through ‘My Zonta’. There are webinars to view, resources to read and videos to watch. Don’t forget to try the Zonta International YouTube channel to keep connected.”

May 15 – Deadline to submit Convention Delegate & Alternate to ZI & Governor at [email protected]

June 1 – Deadline to submit new President & Treasurer to ZI & [email protected] & [email protected] So, Club Nominating Committees must give members the candidates’ names so voting can occur before June 1.

June 1 – Deadline for Club Treasurers to submit ZI dues of $91.00 US$/person. On May 1, ZI emailed the club dues invoice to every club treasurer.

Summary of President Susanne’s May Meeting with Governors:

2020 Online Convention – Virtual events are open to ALL Zontians, not just those who registered. Clubs will have a voice through their delegates’ viewpoints & votes. Business & some activities will be done online but it will not be a full Convention. Candidates’ speeches will be video recorded. Voting online in early July will be secure by the company employed for it. The new 2020 – 2022 Biennium will begin on July 17 when ZI Board, Nominating Committee & Governors are installed.

Convention Cancellation From Chair Sally Bean – ZI continues working to minimize the financial impact of cancellations – about $810,000 US$. We do have insurance but need to know how it will work in each instance. The work to prepare a Convention starts about four years before so it’s a lot of work to dismantle it. They hope to send a report to presidents at the end of May. After that, contact Sally Bean in case of problems.

Dues Process – Making Club Life & Work Easier – Early entry of new members will be done by June 1 so they will be included in Convention. PayPal can now be used for ZIF donations, etc. Clubs with extraordinary difficulties paying dues should contact ZI for possible extensions. Many clubs also privately help individuals who need time or help.

Information & Inspiration

 These include the Zonta magazine, e-newsletters, pre-recorded sessions, the new ZI Website – hopefully completed in early June & the Schedule of Talks soon to be announced.

May 15: Talk on “Zonta Life in Times of COVID-19”

July [email protected] a.m. Chicago Time, Talk with Sheryl WuDunn, author of “Half the Sky”

Let’s not let the Coronavirus overshadow our wonderful Centennial Celebration. The cancellations of Convention, Workshops & club events were sad. But take time to remember all the good times.

My hope is that you & your families all have good health. Take care,

Bonnie Clesse
