Acknowledging & Recognizing

Congratulations!

In this biennium, let us take the time and opportunity to recognize and acknowledge those around us that empower women through service and advocacy.

Alisa Douglas, 2023 STEM District 4

In 2019 and 2021, Zonta International was pleased to support the Zonta International Women in Technology Scholarships to encourage women to pursue education, career opportunities and leadership roles in information technology. In June 2022, the Zonta International membership voted to continue the program with an expanded focus on all STEM fields, not only technology.

The 2023 Women in STEM recipients will receive an international scholarship of US$5,000 from Zonta International.

MEET Alisa Douglas,

2023 Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathmatics (STEM) Scholarship District 4 Recipient

Congratulations to Alisa Douglas, winner of Zonta Hamilton 1 Women in STEM Award and one of 2 Canadian women chosen for the Zonta International STEM Award!

As an iBIOMED student at McMaster University, Alisa felt she was provided with opportunities to experience various aspects of biomedical engineering research. Alisa is currently completing her graduate work in the Jeschke Lab in the Centre for Burn Research, and she sees herself conducting medical research in a hospital lab or as a professor in the future!

“The Women in STEM Scholarship will provide me, foremost, with a great sense of pride and accomplishment. It is confirmation that my hard work is paying off and with encouragement to pursue my goals. Although much of my living and tuition costs are subsidized by my graduate scholarship I would like to use the generous monetary component to pay my travel and registration expenses at the 9th Annual Canadian Burn Conference.”

Meet the 2023 District 4 YWPA Winner

    Trisha Kotakonda

The District 4 Awards Committee is very pleased to have the ZC of Toronto submit Trisha’s application.

For two consecutive years, Trisha Kotakonda was elected as an executive member on her high school’s student government, where she handled administrative responsibilities, council correspondence, and outreach. Through this role, she advocated for social equity and ensured that their administration met students’ needs. Using her platform to build school spirit, student engagement and community bonds has been one of her most rewarding experiences.

Trisha strives to promote diversity, inclusivity and accessibility in her community. By founding and leading her school’s UNICEF chapter, she worked to bring diverse individuals together to address humanitarian issues and build a shared connection to their community. Her chapter has hosted numerous successful food and toy drives, bake sales and awareness campaigns. By spearheading this initiative, she built a strong foundation for students to work towards bringing positive change to the lives of others.

As a volunteer at the Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto, Trisha helps organize events, potlucks and get-togethers for members of her community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she collaborated with other youth to create care packages containing hygiene products and PPE for senior members in her neighborhood.

Trisha is entering her first year in the health sciences honor bachelor program at Queens University. Fostering a passion for medicine and a desire to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives, she aims to pursue a medical degree. She is eager to embrace the challenges that lie ahead and contribute to advancing the field of healthcare.

The District 4 Awards Committee received exceptional applications from clubs. Thank you to all the District 4 Clubs who participated and submitted candidates. The committee looks forward to meeting Ava in the future.
