Zonta Club of Toronto is pleased to present the 2021 Zonta Says NO Award to Shelter Movers.
In 2016, founder and Executive Director, Marc, Hull-Jacquin began looking into gender-based violence in Canada and realized how difficult and dangerous it was for survivors attempting to leave their abusers.
Marc and a small group of volunteers began to work on the concept of a free and safe moving service for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. As well as their main head office in Toronto, Shelter Movers now has satellite branches in Ottawa, Vancouver, Nova Scotia, Montreal Region, and Ontario’s Waterloo and Peel Regions.
The only service of this kind in Canada, Shelter Movers is powered by a dedicated team of trained volunteers that coordinate everything required to move survivors, including storage, rental vehicles, security and/or police escort, movers, drivers, moving supplies, pet fostering and language interpreters. Having completed 2930+ moves since 2016, Shelter Movers is committed to providing no-cost moving and storage services to women and children fleeing gender-based violence.
