The UN created International Mother Earth Day to celebrate and remind us how the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.

The theme, Planet vs. Plastics, calls for everyone to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, to rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion.

Plastic – It never fully goes away. It just breaks into little pieces.
According to the UNEP, at least 11 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans each year. That’s the equivalent of dumping one garbage truck full of plastic into the ocean every minute. If nothing is done, this will increase to two garbage trucks a minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050!
Only about 5 percent of 51 million tons of U.S. plastic waste was recycled in 2021, according to a study from Greenpeace only 5-6%, a big dip from the estimated 9% estimated a few years ago https://phys.org/news/2022-05-plastic-recycled.html
