April 22nd  – INTERNATIONAL MOTHER EARTH DAY

The UN created International Mother Earth Day to celebrate and remind us how the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance.

EARTH DAY, April 22, 2024                                                         PLANET vs PLASTICS

The theme, Planet vs. Plastics, calls for everyone to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, to rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion.

Participating in Earth Day is a powerful way to make a positive impact on our planet. Whether it’s taking part in local clean-up campaigns, planting trees, reducing your carbon footprint, or advocating for policy changes, every action counts.

As we look forward to Earth Day 2024, let’s take a moment to reflect on our role as stewards of the environment. What changes can we make in our daily lives to reduce environmental impact? How can we better support our local communities in their sustainability efforts? How can we promote the importance of environmental protection on a global scale?

By planting trees or a pollinator garden, reducing plastic consumption, participating in advocacy, making sustainable fashion choices, planning your own event, donating, and activating on social media, you can help make a difference and contribute to a greener, more equitable world. Let’s all invest in our planet this Earth Day and beyond!

PlasticIt never fully goes away. It just breaks into little pieces.

According to the UNEP, at least 11 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans each year. That’s the equivalent of dumping one garbage truck full of plastic into the ocean every minute. If nothing is done, this will increase to two garbage trucks a minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050!

Only about 5 percent of 51 million tons of U.S. plastic waste was recycled in 2021, according to a study from Greenpeace only 5-6%, a big dip from the estimated 9% estimated a few years ago https://phys.org/news/2022-05-plastic-recycled.html
